This piece caused quite a controversy at the Salon of 1833. While the folks in Paris were used to their art, especially their marble art, representing gods and heroes, Francois Rude had carved a naked boy playing with a turtle. Rude indeed!
I guess they were just as confused as you might be. Why, they asked themselves, is the boy wearing a hat that looks like a condom? Where did his clothes go? And did he have the turtles consent or was the turtle being held against his will? Should someone call PETA?
These questions still plague art historians today.Neopolitan Fisherman Playing with a Tortoise, François RUDE (Dijon, 1784 - Paris, 1855)
